According to Hartwell (1967–1971), the fruits are plastered onto tumors in India. Indian mangrove is a folk remedy for boils and tumors (Duke and Wain, 1981). Kirtikar and Basu (1975) suggest that the roots are aphrodisiac. Unripe seeds are poulticed onto abscesses, boils, and smallpox sores. Indochinese use the bark for skin afflictions, especially scabies. According to Perry (1980), quoting other sources, “A resinous substance exuded from the bark acts as a contraceptive, and apparently can be taken all year long without ill effects. Philippines use the seed for ulcers, the resin for snakebite.”

Immature pods are green, mature pods are brown colored. Seed is light brown colored, flat and covered with tough coat. Latin name of the plant, “Mimosa pudica”, originates from unusual habit of the plant to shrink its leaves when touched (“pudica” means “bashful”). Mimosa pudica is a type of herbaceous plant that belongs to the legume family. It originates from South and Central America, but it can be found in tropical and subtropical areas around the world today. Mimosa inhabits disturbed areas, orchards, pastures, parks, gardens and areas near the roads. It grows on a well-drained soil, in sunny areas or in a partial shade. Mimosa easily conquers new habitats and eliminates native species of plants. It is classified as invasive species in many countries in the world.

The leaves are very sensitive, both pinnae and leaflets, folding when touched. Pinnae are usually 4, digitately arranged at the end of each petiole, and 4 to 9 centimeters long. The leaflets are narrowly oblong, inequilateral, 1 to 1.5 centimeters long, sessile, sparingly bristly, with pointed tips. Heads are long-peduncled, solitary or 2 to 3 in each axil, about 1 centimeter in diameter. Pods are flat, slightly recurved, 1 to 2 centimeters long, with 3 to 5 one-sided joints that fall away on maturity. Florets are red in the upper part with pink to lavender filaments.
